MARCH 2026

THE LIBAN STORY

In Mogadishu, openly practicing Christianity can result in severe consequences, including the loss of one's life. Nevertheless, Liban (a pseudonym for security purposes), a Somali evangelist, has made the decision to remain in Mogadishu, quietly witnessing for Christ through relationships, integrity, and a resilient faith. He previously delved deeply into Islam, preparing for a role in religious leadership. However, he encountered the gospel during long nights spent wrestling with Scripture and engaging in discussions with believers he met online. Upon becoming a follower of Jesus, he faced a pivotal decision: to remain silent or to remain faithful. He opted for both, embodying his faith with wisdom and discretion among his community. His ministry is characterized by a slow, patient, and deeply relational approach. He engages with seekers individually, often over tea, and sometimes amidst what seems to be a business meeting or an academic discussion. Scripture is shared verbally and committed to memory, without any written evidence. Through these careful, unhurried dialogues, several young men have quietly begun to follow Jesus, continuing to live with their families and remaining part of their communities. What makes him effective is not a specific strategy; rather, it is his authenticity. He possesses an intimate understanding of the culture. He fluently speaks the language of faith, respects clan structures, and embodies a rare form of honesty and compassion that captures people's attention. This credibility opens doors that no sermon could ever achieve. His life serves as the message. The threat is ever-present. Mogadishu is a city filled with watchful eyes, and a single accusation could lead to arrest, violence, or even death. Even family members can become suspicious. The economic burden is heavy on him. If his faith were to be uncovered, he would lose everything in an instant. Yet, he remains steadfast. He believes that obedience to Christ is of greater importance than his own safety. He does not seek recognition. Instead, he desires something more subtle and profound: that these hidden believers would be strengthened, potentially becoming the backbone of prayer in the future.

EQUIPPING AND MOBILIZING EVANGELISTS (E&M)

Equipping and Mobilizing Evangelists for the Harvest

The goal of the Somali Bible Society (SBS) is to equip and mobilize 500 self-supporting evangelists in the first five years of a ten year project. Each of these 500 SBS-trained evangelists, are commissioned to equip and mobilize ten evangelists within the next five to ten years, resulting in 5,000 trained evangelists working in the Somali Peninsula with a mission to make disciples who are making disciples who make disciples.

2025 - A Year of Faithful Labor and Spiritual Breakthrough

By the grace of God and through the power of the Holy Spirit, the year 2025 marked an historic beginning for the Somali Bible Society’s ten-year Evangelistic Campaign (2025–2034). This first year was characterized by bold obedience, sacrificial service, and the faithful proclamation of the Gospel among Somali communities across the Somali Peninsula. Through prayer, discipleship, and courageous witness, the Lord has begun to establish a multiplying movement of evangelists, disciples, and house fellowships. Despite great challenges and spiritual opposition, the Gospel advanced, and many came to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Evangelists Trained and Deployed

In 2025, the Somali Bible Society equipped and mobilized 125 Somali evangelists who committed themselves to serving as faithful witnesses of Christ among their own people. We achieved 125% of the 2025 goal (equipping and mobilizing 100 evangelists). These evangelists, many of whom serve as tentmakers, have embraced the call to proclaim the Good News in both urban centers and remote nomadic communities. These newly mobilized evangelists demonstrated remarkable faithfulness and obedience. As disciple-makers, they immediately began multiplying the work by training others.

Multiplication Through Evangelist-Led Training

As a direct result of this multiplication vision, the 125 SBS-trained evangelists trained an additional 71 evangelists in Somalia. This multiplication reflects the early stages of a Disciple-Making Movement, in which trained believers equip others to carry forward the mission of Christ. This multiplication confirms that the harvest is growing not only through addition but also through faithful spiritual reproduction.

New Adult Believers from Muslim Backgrounds

Through the faithful witness of SBS evangelists and ministry partners, 598 adult Somali Muslims made the life-transforming decision to follow the Lord Jesus Christ in 2025 (as a result of this E & M project). These men and women encountered the truth of the Gospel, repented of their sins, and began their journey as disciples of Christ. Many of these new believers came to faith through personal relationships, one-on-one evangelism, Scripture distribution, and house-based discipleship.

Revival Among Nominal Christian Families

In addition to those from Muslim backgrounds, 158 individuals from nominal Christian families—whose parents and grandparents identified culturally as Christians but lacked a personal relationship with Christ—experienced genuine spiritual renewal and fully committed their lives to the Lord Jesus. These individuals moved from nominal identity to authentic discipleship, demonstrating the Holy Spirit’s work in restoring and strengthening the body of Christ.

Total New Followers of Jesus in 2025 Resulting from the E&M Project

By God’s grace, there was a total of 756 new believers reported in 2025 from the E&M Project (598 from Muslim background and 158 from nominal Christian families). It is important to note that this number likely underrepresents the full harvest because some local ministries have not yet reported their statistics and not all Somali ministries currently partner with SBS. These 756 new believers are in addition to the existing 200 daily conversion rate. We give all glory to God, who alone draws hearts to Himself.

Formation of New House Churches and Fellowships

As a direct result of the E&M Project, 39 new house churches, fellowships, and Bible study groups were established in 2025. These churches and fellowships serve as centers of worship and prayer, Biblical teaching and discipleship, mutual encouragement and spiritual growth, and evangelistic outreach into surrounding communities. These house churches represent the foundation of a growing indigenous Somali Church movement.

A Strong Foundation for the Decade Ahead

The year 2025 has laid a powerful and Spirit-led foundation for the Somali Bible Society’s ten-year evangelistic vision. We have equipped and mobilized 196 new evangelists (125 trained by SBS and 71 additional evangelists through a multiplication “Train-Retrain” Methodolgy). These new evangelists have led 756 new believers into His Kingdom and established 39 new house churches and fellowships. Although these evangelists faced grave and severe persecution, God gave a great harvest, confirming that He is at work among the Somali people. The seeds planted in 2025 will continue to yield fruit in the years ahead. With continued prayer, faithful evangelism, and dependence on the Holy Spirit, we believe the Lord will fulfill the vision of raising thousands of evangelists and bringing hundreds of thousands of Somalis into His Kingdom by 2034.

“The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” — Matthew 9:37–38

UPDATE ON GIVING FOR GSC BUILDING SITE

In order to provide mission resilience for the Somali Bible Society (SBS) and to supply housing for training, education, and discipleship activities, the SBS is planning to build a ministry center in the heart of Somalia. We have entered into a purchase contract for the building site at a cost of $240,000. (This location that provides needed security came at a high price).
